Gerund merupakan perubahan kata kerja menjadi kata benda dengan penambahan akhiran -ing pada kata kerja tersebut.
Contoh
Saya suka berenang setiap hari.
Renang merupakan salah satu perlombaan di Asian Games.
Perhatikan contoh diatas. Pada kalimat pertama, berenang merupakan suatu aktivitas (kata kerja). Sedangkan pada kalimat kedua, renang merupakan suatu jenis olahraga (kata benda).
Jenis Gerund
Ada beberapa kasus untuk penggunaan gerund:
1. Sebagai Subjek
Gerund terletak di awal kalimat.
Contoh
Dancing is great fun.
Cooking is my hobby.
Smoking is bad for your health.
Geocaching can be dangerous.
2. Sebagai Objek
Gerund berperan sebagai objek jika terletak pada setelah kata kerja tertentu.
Rumusnya :
K. Kerja tertentu + V-ing / Being + V-3
Gunakan V-ing untuk kalimat aktif, sedangkan untuk kalimat pasif gunakan Being + V-3

She avoided telling him about her plans.
He enjoys having a bath in the evening.

3. Setelah Frasa Tertentu
Gunakan gerund setelah frasa dibawah ini:

Contoh
He is interested in making friends.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
I am used to speaking loudly.
You object to signing this letter.
I am accustomed to sleeping late on the weekend.
4. Setelah kata kerja tertentu
Gunakan gerund atau to + V-1 setelah kata kerja dibawah ini.
Catat!
V-ing digunakan untuk kejadian yang telah selesai.
To + V-1 digunakan untuk kejadian yang akan terjadi.

I don't like playing cards.

5. Setelah Preposisi
Gunakan gerund setelah kata depan (preposisi).
